KYBELLA® Treatment & What To Expect

TREAT SUBMENTAL FAT, PERMANENTLY!
Whether that stubborn fat pad under your chin is something you’ve had your whole life or developed just recently, this condition called submental fullness or “double chin” has long been an annoyance for many.

What Causes Double Chin?

There are plenty of exercises out there that help remove excess fat and some are specifically done to target the fat found in the chin and neck. However, they don’t always prove to be effective enough to eliminate submental fullness. Here are what associates having a double chin:

  • Weight gain
  • Genetic makeup
  • Aging

KYBELLA® – A NON-SURGICAL, INJECTABLE TREATMENT

Kybella is the commercial name for deoxycholic acid and is the only FDA-approved injectable treatment that targets fatty pockets beneath your chin. This treatment aims to destroy fat cells in the applied area under the chin to permanently remove submental fullness ( double chin ) and improve your chin profile. Kybella double chin remover being a non-surgical treatment means that it does not involve incisions, thus, only requiring minimal downtime.

How Does KYBELLA® Work?
The active ingredient in Kybella is synthetic deoxycholic acid, which in its natural form, is produced in your digestive system functioning as a substance that helps break down fats so they become easily digested. Upon injection, this same acid destroys the fat cells in the treatment region beneath the chin and prevents them from accumulating any more excess fat in the future. This means that you will get a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin while no longer requiring to have further treatment once your desired aesthetic goal is reached. Apart from being used to permanently remove submental fullness, it also serves as a non-surgical option for lipomas – non-cancerous fatty tumors found underneath the skin.
Is KYBELLA® Right For Me?

Suitable candidates for this treatment are people of all genders that are above 18 years old with moderate to severe fatty pockets beneath their chins, who also want to eliminate the appearance of a double chin without having to go under surgery.

Kybella may be right for you if:

  • You’re bothered (unhappy, self-conscious, embarrassed) by fat under the chin, also known as submental fullness
  • You feel the condition makes you look older or heavier than you actually are
  • You don’t want to have surgery
  • You eat well and exercise, but submental fullness does not go away

NUMBER OF KYBELLA® TREATMENT SESSIONS YOU NEED

Does Having 2-3 KYBELLA® Sessions Enough?

Since everyone’s chin profile is different, the number of treatments varies from patient to patient.

Under normal conditions, it is very common to see most of our clients given 2-3 treatments before finally achieving their desired aesthetic goal for their chin profiles. Your healthcare specialist will help determine the number of treatment sessions you need based on the amount and distribution of your submental fat as well as your personal treatment goals. Each Kybella treatment session will have at least a 1-month gap before the next session is done and one reason is to completely recover from normal side effects such as swelling among several others. As a rule of thumb, you should not be receiving more than 6 treatments.

PREPARATION BEFORE RECEIVING TREATMENT

Because Kybella is a non-surgical procedure, there is only a little preparation required. Before you undergo treatment for Kybella double chin remover, we have to make sure that you are suitable for it and devise a treatment plan that is tailored to your needs. We will need to discuss with you your medical history, and any history of cosmetic procedures done on your face, chin, or neck. It is also best for you to disclose any swallowing or bleeding problems, as well as if you are nursing, pregnant, or planning to bear a child in the future. We highly advise scheduling the procedure well before any major events. Properly washing your face before the appointment can help reduce the risks of infection, and avoiding ibuprofen and acetaminophen can also prevent bruising after the treatment.

How Is KYBELLA® Administered?

Before starting treatment, your healthcare specialist will examine the area under and around your chin to determine if Kybella double chin remover is right for you. Then, your specialist will tailor your treatment to the amount of fat under the chin and your aesthetic goals.

Treatment can only be administered by a Kybella-trained healthcare specialist. At each treatment, you will receive multiple small injections under your chin, and the injection process takes about 15 to 20 minutes. The exact number of injections will depend on the amount of fat you have under your chin and your desired profile.

WHAT YOU SHOULD TELL YOUR DOCTOR BEFORE RECEIVING KYBELLA® TREATMENT

Before receiving Kybella, tell your healthcare provider about all of your medical conditions, including if you:

  • Have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin
  • Have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin
  • Have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area
  • Have had or have trouble swallowing
  • Have bleeding problems
  • Are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if KYBELLA® will harm your unborn baby)
  • Are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if KYBELLA® passes into your breast milk)
  • Are taking any medications, especially blood thinners

THINGS TO EXPECT AFTER THE KYBELLA® TREATMENT

Most patients need to expect 2-3 Kybella treatments before achieving their desired aesthetic goals. Some may need to see through nearly 6 treatments to achieve visible improvements depending on how much initial fat is present in the treatment area, the amount of product used during treatment, as well as how the patients respond to the treatment. Treatment sessions are done at least 4 weeks apart and results can show in 6-8 weeks after the initial treatment.

The outcomes, on the other hand, can last for a long time or even permanently after the deoxycholic acid eliminates the fat cells in the chin treatment region. With fat cells no longer able to store fat following this procedure, patients typically are no longer required to undergo any additional treatment. After treatment, most patients report some degree of swelling with significant ones lasting approximately between 24-48 hours. Patients can experience some slight burning as the medication is distributed in the treatment area persisting from minutes to a few hours and firmness of the skin that can last for a few days. Temporary numbness in the treatment area is also normal. These side effects are completely resolved within a couple of short weeks while seeing visible improvements on your chin profile.

Will I Need Time To Recover?

After a Kybella treatment, you will likely have swelling, bruising, or numbness under your chin which are all normal and can last within 1-5 days. However, be sure to inform your healthcare professional if you develop an uneven smile, facial muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, or injection site problems such as bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), and damage and tissue cell-death (necrosis) around the injection site. Call your healthcare provider if you develop open sores or drainage from the treatment area.

Some swelling, bruising, or numbness is normal after a Kybella double chin remover treatment. It is vital to inform the provider promptly if the patient develops unusual side effects such as weakness in facial muscles or an uneven smile.

What are the possible side effects of KYBELLA®?

The most common side effects of Kybella include swelling, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness in the treatment area.

Kybella can also cause serious side effects, including

  • Nerve injury in the jaw (which can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness)
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Injection site problems include bruising, hair loss, open sores (ulcers), damage, and tissue cell-death (necrosis) around the injection site
  • Artery or vein damage if Kybella is inadvertently injected into it

Call your healthcare provider if you: begin to develop weakness in the muscles of your face, or your smile becomes uneven; have difficulty swallowing, or if any of the symptoms that you already have get worse; develop open sores or drainage from the treatment area.

These are not all of the possible side effects of Kybella double chin remover. Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects.
